Oberlin Women’s History: Breaking Down the Barriers to Debate, 1835-1935

Dr. Carly S. Woods will discuss how generations of women students fought for the right to debate and used the activity to create a space for themselves at Oberlin College and in their later social, political, and intellectual pursuits.
Dr. Woods is Associate Professor and Co-Director of Graduate Studies, Department of Communication, and Affiliate Faculty, Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, University of Maryland. She is the author of Debating Women: Gender, Education, and Spaces for Argument, 1835-1945 (East Lansing: Michigan State University Press, 2018).
The program will be moderated by Kathy Kendall ’58, Research Professor of Communication at the University of Maryland.
