The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency

The Group decided it was time for a brief respite for humor and lightness.

The Ladies’ No.1 Detective Agency is the name given to Alexander McCall’s 21-novel series, which proceed sequentially. The title is the same as that of the first book in the series, which we’ll be discussing. For fans or those hooked immediately, we suggest also the optional read of the second in the series, “Tears of the Giraffe.”

BOOK REVIEW:
“The books can come across as portraits shielding reality.” It’s true that the problems explored in Mma Ramotswe’s Botswana Detective Agency do not include AIDS, poverty, inequality and widespread unemployment. Instead Mma Ramotswe concentrates on bovine disappearances, witchcraft, and her relationship with her former husband, Note Mokoti.

Yet the success of the No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series suggests we are happy to leave reality tucked away.”
Ruaridh Nicoll, The Observer

“Precious Ramotswe has only just set up shop as Botswana's No.1 (and only) lady detective when she is hired to track down a missing husband, uncover a con man, and follow a wayward daughter. However, the case that tugs at her heart, and lands her in danger, is a missing eleven-year-old boy, who may have been snatched by witch doctors.
