John will assess the leadership of Speaker Pelosi, who ascended to that position in 2007, and will explore the politics, processes, and interpersonal relationships that shaped legislation and policies across key issues ranging from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the financial crisis of 2008, health care and other issues on the agendas of the Bush and Obama Administrations.

John Lawrence ’70 is a Visiting Professor at the University of California’s Washington Center. He served for 38 years as a staff member in the U. S. House of Representatives, the last 8 as Chief of Staff to Speaker Nancy Pelosi. His other books include The Class of ’74: Congress After Watergate and the Roots of Partisanship (2018) and The Undiscovered Archives of Sherlock Holmes (2022), a collection of original, historically-based short stories. He blogs on Congress and politics at DOMEocracy. John majored in History at Oberlin and earned a Ph.D. in History from the University of California Berkeley.
