Oberlin's first concert of the new decade is happening right here in San Francisco! Come out and join your fellow Obies on Sunday, January 12, 2020 for the West Coast debut of Oberlin’s own Sonny Rollins Ensemble in the Joe Henderson Lab at SFJAZZ.
The Oberlin Conservatory Jazz Department celebrated 25 years in 2019 and last year also saw the debut of the Oberlin Sonny Rollins Jazz Ensemble. Made possible by a generous gift from Sonny Rollins, membership in “The Sonny Ensemble” is awarded through audition to outstanding Oberlin student musicians who, in the tradition of Rollins himself, exhibit exemplary commitment to serving humanity.
Variable in size, the Sonny Ensemble performs in flexible configurations in formal settings, outreach programs, and in national and international venues. Members, called “Sonny Scholars,” must dedicate at least two semesters to performing in the ensemble and membership in the ensemble requires a commitment to service through music and willingness to give for others—core principles exemplified by Rollins throughout his life and career.
Following last January’s highly-successful New York City debut at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club, the ensemble is EXCITED to make its West Coast debut and looks forward to meeting you, all, at the post-concert reception!
Tickets are $25 and proceeds will benefit the Oberlin Wendell Logan Conservatory Jazz Studies Scholarship. Limited seats available!
