Alice Imamoto Takemoto ’47 was among the 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry who in the aftermath of the Pearl Harbor attack were uprooted and sent to prison camps strewn across the U.S. Alice and her family in 1942 were sent from California to Jerome, Arkansas. Hearing later that Oberlin was one of the colleges that stepped forward to accept students of Japanese ancestry, Alice applied to and was accepted into the Oberlin Conservatory. She left the incarceration camp and spent 4-years on campus, graduating in 1947. Afterwards she taught piano, performed, raised a family, and over recent years has been a featured speaker at civil rights programs.
Alice lives in Maryland and remains active in music. She welcomes the opportunity to chat with friends in the Oberlin community. In contributing to the historical record, Alice offers important lessons that can be applied in our era of racial profiling, forced family separations and caging of children, and political race-baiting.
