A Zoom Conversation with Liza Figueroa Kravinsky ’85, Founder of the GoGo Symphony
Liza Figueroa Kravinsky is the founder and composer of the GoGo Symphony, which combines Washington DC’s go-go music with classical for danceable symphonies. She will discuss connecting with both African American and younger audiences through shared music while dealing with challenges posed by the “mainstream” classical orchestra industry. Join us to explore the go-go scene and learn more about the GoGo Symphony which has succeeded in attracting a diverse and contemporary audience, and has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra, the Capital City Symphony, DC Strings Orchestra, and at the Congressional Correspondents Dinner.
Liza graduated from Oberlin with a degree in Sociology while taking music theory and composition courses in the Conservatory. She previously worked as a composer with Prince and toured as a keyboard player with Stacy Lattisaw. She is the winner of several awards, including an RIAA Platinum record, the Bronze Cindy Award, Telly, ITVA DC Best Take, Best Music for Feature at the Atlantic City Cinefest, and Docs In Progress Women In Docs awards.
