Oberlin Conservatory Global
Join Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology Kathryn Metz as she presents a class from her course Ingenuity and Innovation: How Rock and Roll Splintered in the 1970s, one of the courses in the newly announced Oberlin Conservatory Global classroom without boundaries initiative. Born out of the successful implementation of virtual education for Oberlin students during the past year, this new series of thoughtfully crafted courses combines virtual lectures, workshops, classes, and more.
Revisit the Oberlin classroom with Robert S. Danforth Professor of History and Professor of Africana Studies and Comparative American Studies Renee Romano as she presents a live special-version of her lecture Imperfect Union: Slavery, Settler Colonialism, and America’s White Republic from the “Healing Democracy” course. “Healing Democracy,” offered this spring to potential future Obies, grapples with the urgency and complexity of the current historic moment in the United States, exploring questions of common humanity, mutual accountability, and faith in democracy as the promise of equality. We look forward to offering the full 8-week course to our alumni in the fall.
11 AM | "Scholar’s Take": Interdisciplinary Film Talk with Oberlin Faculty
Join Associate Professor of French and Cinema Studies Grace An, Associate Professor of Africana Studies Charles Peterson, and Visiting Assistant Professor CinemaStudies and Creative Writing Josh Sperling for a talk about the intersection of scholarship, classroom discussion, social issues, and audience response in today’s filmed entertainment. This event is co-hosted by Obiewood: Oberlin Entertainment Network, which seeks to raise Oberlin College’s brand profile as a source of high-quality creators and thinkers in the film and television industry, and will be moderated by television writer and producer Andrew Guest ’99.
12:30 PM | Crimson & Gold Celebration
Join President Carmen Twillie Ambar for a State of the College discussion during this hourlong celebration of alumni and Oberlin College & Conservatory.
